The 2019 Infiniti Q60 is a 2-door coupe version of the Japanese carmaker’s Q50 four-door sedan. Like some of the other offerings in Infiniti’s 2019 model range, the Q60 coupe is an ambitious attempt at a contender in the performance coupe segment but the Japanese car manufacturer’s offering is not quite up to the mark. Subjective as it may be, we feel the curvaceous and aggressive styling of Infiniti Q60 is enticingly beautiful but behind the wheel, this offering fails to impress performance enthusiasts that flock to the segment. However, with Infiniti Q60 customers do get great value for money in comparison to its rivals like the BMW 4-Series and Audi A5.
There is extensive use of pleasing and attractive materials across the cabin of the 2019 Infiniti Q60. The front seats are quite spacious but the overall design of the interior is dated. Infiniti offers the same unintuitive dual-screen infotainment unit in the Q60 coupe like the one found in the Q50 sedan. This unit features a display screen that features dated graphics and a touchscreen control panel which sits under it offers unintuitive capacitive touch controls.
The 2019 Infiniti Q60 does not get Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in any of its variants, even though these are standard features in other offerings of the segment but Infiniti does offer a 4G-LTE powered mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and the navigation system as optional extras. Also offered as an optional extra is a Bose audio system.
Infiniti's design language seems more pleasing on the Q60 than as seen on the four-door Q50 sedan. The curvaceous bodywork and at places sharp and aggressive design accents are writing checks for Infiniti W60 which under the skin, this coupe cannot cash. The distinctive aesthetics alone cannot help Infiniti Q60 hold its ground as other performance coupes in the segment also flaunt aggressive and sporty designs.
Key differences difference between the standard Infiniti Q60 and the more expensive Red Sport 400 variant include standard adaptive dampers and an optional steering system which Infiniti calls ‘Direct Adaptive Steering’. The more expensive Q60 Red Sport 400 also comes with larger wheels and sticky tires along with much stronger brakes which substantially improves its handling characteristics. The standard steering system is quite accurate but lacks the feedback offered by the Q60's optional advanced steering system.
Customers can buy their 2019 Infiniti Q60 with either a standard 3-liter turbocharged V6 or a more powerful unit which comes with twin-turbo speed sensors and dual water pump units. The standard V6 powerplant produces 300 BHP of power at 6400 RPM and 295 lb-ft of peak torque between 1600 and 5200 RPM. The more powerful 6 cylinder unit produces 400 BHP of power at 6400 RPM and 350 lb-ft of peak torque between 1600 and 5200 RPM. Both powerplants come mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and customers can select between the standard rear-wheel-drive and Infiniti’s intelligent all-wheel-drive drivetrains.
The 2019 Infiniti Q60 gets a wide range of driver assistance technology but most of these features are offered as optional extras as part of the ‘pro-assist’ package which comes with 360-degree camera, system blind-spot monitoring, rear-mounted emergency brake, and front and rear parking sensors. Other safety features like automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning are offered on the more expensive trims starting from the ‘Luxe’ models. The Red Sport 400 manages to offer a 163 feet braking distance when stopping from 70 mph which is not as impressive as other offerings in the segment but the brake pedal offered in the model does bestow a sense of confidence as it is quite responsive.
The 2019 Infiniti Q60 is neither the ultimate performance coupe nor is it an impressive luxury two-door grand tourer but it can be argued that the Japanese offering does make for a satisfactory compromise between the two. Taking a look at its rivals in the segment amongst other offerings which come with price tags close to nearing the six-figure mark, Infiniti Q60 is an admirable attempt at a value for money two-door performance luxury coupe.
