Cadillac Super Cruise now flaunts automatic lane changing

Courtesy of the upgraded Super Cruise driver assistance tech, the 2021 models of the Cadillac CT4, CT5, and Escalade will feature a brand new and high-tech automatic lane changing function. That is, the Cadillac CT4, CT5, and Escalade with the new tech will now be capable of changing lanes automatically.

"This is our most extensive update we’ve made to Super Cruise since its debut. We have made a number of improvements to make Super Cruise more intuitive, better performing and more accessible for our customers. In addition to the automated lane change functionality, we’ve made improvements to the user interface and hands-free driving dynamics", Super Cruise chief engineer Mario Maiorana mentioned at the introduction of the tech.

In order to bring the tech to fruition, Cadillac has equipped the Super Cruise driver assistance tech with rear-facing sensors, enhanced map info, and updated software. So, how does the automatic lane changing tech work? Well, the operation is rather simple. Whenever the driver wants to change lane, he or she simply needs to activate the turn signal. The car will then look for an opening and change the lane. Moreover, messages like "looking for an opening" and "changing lanes" appear on the instrument cluster while the tech is in action.

"These enhancements were made possible using GM’s all-new digital vehicle platform, which provides more electrical bandwidth and data processing power. As a result, these enhancements will only be available going forward on vehicles built on that digital platform", told Cadillac to Motor1.com when the portal asked the automaker whether or not the existing version of the Super Cruise can be updated and get the new feature.
