Volkswagen ID.4 SUV to hit production, will premiere at Detroit Auto Show

Volkswagen has been generous with its EV segment and the latest one to join the line-up is the ID.4 concept SUV. However, this pure electric vehicle is no longer in its concept form and has taken physical attire that has moved closer to production. It is reported to be available for buyers in 2021.

The ID. 4 SUV that we see here is seen wearing a camouflage pattern, though it appears to be one of the color and pattern variations that the EV might be available in. And if this is true, the blue stripes do look as good as the red that we saw in the concept form.

Volkswagen ID.4 rear

There are many changes that we see in this production-ready model of ID. 4 SUV. It now gets conventional rear doors in place of the sliding ones from the concept. Moreover, there are conventional DRLs and outside door mirrors, much like any conventional car.

Mechanically, the ID. 4 SUV is expected to get two electric motors, as hinted by the concept ID. Crozz. The front-mounted electric motor will be capable of producing a maximum power of 102 PS and 140 Nm of torque, while the rear unit will make a better 204 PS of power and 310 Nm of torque. The combined power of 306 PS would be enough to power the vehicle for a sporty drive that could touch a top speed of around 180 kmph.

Volkswagen ID.4 side

The ID. 4 SUV would be available with an RWD configuration at the start, while the all-wheel-drive mechanism would be joining the lineup at a later date. The battery is expected to provide around 500 kilometers driving range, while the 150 kW DC charger can charge it to 80% in just 30 minutes.

It will be built on Volkswagen’s MEB platform, which allows the placement of the battery in the center, thereby enhancing the center of gravity. The load-balance of the axles is also perfect with such architecture.

The undisguised version of the Volkswagen ID. 4 SUV would be displayed at the Detroit Auto Show in June. The EV will hit production in China, Europe, and the USA and will be a globally available model post the launch.
