In the US automotive industry’s minivan segment, Honda Odyssey rules the roost. Odyssey embarked on its fairy tale run in the summer of 1994 and is currently plying on American roads with its fifth upgraded edition. Country’s most loved minivan is on sale with a price tag of $31,235. This compact family car boasts high-quality interiors and performance that gives good competition to minivans of the same class as Toyota Sienna and the Chrysler Pacifica.
Other than a spacious ride with the added joy of comfortable seating in all of its three rows, the vehicle also packs in excellent driving dynamics loaded with an equally intuitive infotainment system. This model is not a major overhaul of design and features.
Fifth-generation Odyssey is a minor upgrade to its previous generation and retains many attributes of the preceding model, including the powertrain. Buyers are offered a total of five variants, namely LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite, with the top-spec model priced at $48,115 (prices are MSRP).
The soft-touch fabrics throughout and attractive design gives the Odyssey a more luxurious look than some rivals.
The Odyssey can room a family dog or even some beach gear with its nearly 39 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and a maximum cargo capacity of 158 cubic feet which is a number that very few minivans can match. The highly adjustable second-row seats make the creation of space even easier.
The standard attributes present in the Odyssey include a seven-speaker audio system, a 5-inch display screen, hands-free text messaging, Bluetooth, and two USB ports. Other custom features available include a navigation system, satellite radio, a rear-seat Blu-ray entertainment system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, an 8-inch touch screen, an 11-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and a wireless phone charger. Odyssey's intuitive infotainment system allows easy navigation of the menu and has complementary physical controls for the touch screen as well. The screen even lets you rearrange app icons, thus enabling prioritization of content.
he minivan sports a dynamic front that shows off multi-reflector halogen headlights with auto-off and body-colored power side mirrors. The top of the Odyssey has a roofline spoiler with integrated brake light while the rear of the car sports taillights with integrated LED light bars and an intermittent rear window wiper. The 18-inches, light, silver-painted alloy wheels and black chrome handles on the doors are just add-ons to its already stylish appearance. The LX variant comes dressed in four paint schemes, namely White Diamond, Modern Steel, Lunar Silver, and Obsidian Blue.
The Odyssey allows you to enjoy effortless and smooth rides, thanks to its standard front-wheel drive which makes bumps or bounces unnoticeable even over rough roads. Alongside absorbing most road imperfections, the Odyssey also ensures good handling for a minivan. The steering is sharp and well-weighted, and there isn't much body roll while taking turns.
The 2019 model of the minivan is powered by a 3,471 cc, 3.5-litre, 24-valve, SOHC i-VTEC, V6 engine wedded to a 9-speed automatic transmission setup. The setup allows the Odyssey to reach 28 0hp of maximum power at 6,000rpm and around 262 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,700 rpm. The engine comes with features like Hill Start Assist, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Active Control Engine Mount System (ACM), and Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). The overall mileage offered by the Odyssey LX, according to company claims, is 22 mpg with an added fuel tank capacity of 19.5 gallons.
This Honda uses the power-assisted ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes to gain necessary deceleration. The active safety features available in the minivan include Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), a multi-angle rearview camera, Daytime Running Lights (DRL), blind spot monitoring with cross traffic alert, and park assist. The Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance features consists of forward collision, road departure, lane departure warning, pre-collision braking, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
The 2019 Honda Odyssey carries on with the lore of its predecessors and doesn’t fail to reserve a place near the top of most minivan rankings. It is difficult to find a better and more modern minivan than the Odyssey. If you are thinking of trying your luck with a van, you should consider bringing an Odyssey home.
With more and more buyers inclining towards buying an SUV these days, the minivan segment seems to have shrunken. But thankfully there are still some people like me who like to drive the minivans and are still impressed by their everyday utility and practicality. I own a Honda Odyssey and have been driving it for over a year now and
Honda has done an amazing job with the Odyssey. it has reigned supreme in the minivan segment for a long long time and for obvious reasons! It has extremely spacious interiors, good quality of materials all around and it has its own vacuum cleaner! Being a minivan, the Odyssey does is best driven in a sedate manner and is great
