Ford has redesigned the Explorer for 2020 and this includes some massive improvements. The three-row, midsize SUV now handles better and can tow more. Most explorers come with six seats with two captain chairs in the middle row which can be easily configured. There are 4 trims on offer. The XLT and the Limited are equipped with a 2.3L EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engines producing 300 hp. The Platinum has a twin-turbocharged 3L V6 making 365 hp and the sporty ST has the same engine tuned to produce 400 hp. With the right drivetrain, the Explorer can pull up to 5600 lbs. There is also a hybrid variant that uses a 3.3 L V6 engine with an electric motor to give a combined output of 318 hp. Power goes to the rear wheels but AWD is available as an option. The transmission uses a 10-speed automatic across the range. As is the 8” touchscreen infotainment with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Platinum and ST models come equipped with a 10.1” vertically oriented screen. Driver assistance features like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping assist also come as standard. The Ford Explorer is a mid-size SUV that has evolved in terms of design over its long product cycle spanning over 30 years. An overhauled 2020 Ford Explorer was revealed earlier in January at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In terms of changes, the SUV gets a modern hybrid set-up and a new sporty ST variant. The 2020 Ford Explorer carline is spread across four variants including XLT, Limited, ST and Platinum grades with prices starting from $36,675 going up to $58,250 for the range-topping trim. Positioned below the base trim, the Limited variant is priced at $48,130 and the new ST trim at $54,740 (all prices MSRP). The 2020 Ford Explorer is available with three engine options including a 2.3L EcoBoost, 3.0L EcoBoost engines and a 3.3L hybrid set-up.
Aesthetically, it is more appealing as it sheds off the boxy semblance and dons a sleeker look. The face gets a restyled grille, featuring a different element in each grade. That said, the lower variants come with black mesh finish, while the chrome treatment is reserved for the higher trims save for the ST variant which features an all-black unit. The all-LED headlamp in front add up to the sporty looks. Even though the boxy look is gone, the wider stance lends it the much required muscular appearance. There is a single side body panel which stretches up to the middle of the C-pillar. The sloping roofline, on the other hand, reiterates the sporty profile, while short overhangs facilitate better off-roading abilities, making it a perfect companion during the countryside trips.
Dimensionally, the 2020 Ford Explorer remains largely same save for the wheelbase which measures 6.3 inches, hinting at a roomier cabin. Thinner doors, restyled centre console and a new rotary-dial gearshift help carve out additional space inside the cabin. As for the feature list, the three-row crossover packs a 12.3-inch customizable digital cluster with graphics that are specific to the top-spec variants. A large portrait-style touchscreen unit with Apple CarPlay etc. is mounted on the dash. It additionally gets multiple USB ports and wireless charging points. Heated and cooled eight-way adjustable seats, bucket seats in the second row, centre storage areas for the second row along with square shape cup-holders are some of the other interior features.
Coming to the 2020 Ford Explorer specifications, it is available with a 2.3L EcoBoost engine with 300 hp of power and 310 lb-ft of torque. The high displacing 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 unit powers the top-spec Platinum trim tuned to put out 365hp against 380 lb-ft of torque. This unit has been calibrated to make 400hp and 415 lb-ft torque in the new ST variant. The Limited Hybrid draws power from a 3.3L V6 which belts out 318hp and 336 lt-ft of torque. There is a standard 10-speed automatic gearbox with select shift capability. The standard safety kit on the three-row crossover comprises AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, Belt-Minder, Traction Control, Safety Canopy System, SOS Post-Crash Alert System and Front Passenger Knee Airbag.
